<p>Created as the 4th Fighter Wing in July 1947 at Andrews AFB as a SAC unit flying the P-80, the unit changed to Fighter-Interceptor Wing status and transferred to TAC in January 1950. It relocated to the Far East between 1950 and 1957 before moving to Seymour Johnson AFB in December 1957, and becoming a Tactical Fighter Wing the following year. The unit won the F-4 category in the 1976 William Tell competition at Tyndall AFB with the F-4E. The wing has operated a variety of fighter aircraft including the F-86, F-100, F-105 and F-4 before becoming the first operational F-15E wing in 1990. Two squadrons of F-15Es deployed to Al Kharj, Saudi Arabia for Desert Storm as part of 4th TFW (Provisional). Upon return to USA in spring 1991, the unit was redesignated 4th Wing and, as the first composite wing, gained two KC-10A squadrons from SAC. The two KC-10 squadrons were transferred without their aircraft to McConnell AFB and Grand Forks AFB on 29 April 1994. To enable the Extenders to continue to operations at Seymour Johnson pending their transfer to other units, the 711th and 744th ARS were formed for a temporary period. The 333rd FS was assigned on 1 October 1994 as the F-15E formal training unit.
